Form an effective local river advocacy organization.

A river near you needs a leader just like you! But it can be confusing to get started. A sister organization, Rivers Alliance of Wisconsin, has assembled a wealth of non-profit resources that can help you put it all the pieces together for your group to effectively advocate for rivers.

What’s in your water?

IOWATER volunteers have become extremely important for measuring the health of your favorite stream or river. See www.iowater.net to learn how you can become trained to monitor a stream near your home.

Join or start stream clean-ups.

The trash in Iowa’s rivers is a shame, and a barometer of how our culture values rivers. Do you part to help clean up a nearby river. A wealth of clean-ups have sprung up! See http://www.keepersoftheland.org/ for its calendar of volunteer opportunities.
See www.iowater.net for clean-up resources, including Iowa StreamKeepers manuals.

Report spills, illegal dumping, and ATVs in channels of navigable rivers, all of which are law-enforcement violotations.

Quickly reporting a fish kill or algae bloom to your region’s DNR Field Office can make a big difference in how severely a stream will be impacted by the problem’s source.  Report illegal dumping or illegal ATV riding by following the link, clicking on your area, and calling the Iowa DNR law-enforcement agent in your area.
